Our girl Karen Civil has introduced us to artists such as Drake, J. Cole, and Nicki Minaj, so it’s safe to say she knows good music. We checked in with Karen to get the scoop on her killer website, favorite brands, most memorable interviews, and much more.

What was the inspiration to start KarenCivil.com back in 2008?

I was a fan of hip-hop sites in general, so me being in the industry and having all of these connections, I wanted the two worlds to meet [to] give everyone an insiders look with behind-the-scene interviews and exclusive music, as well as creating a platform for new artists [such as] J.Cole, Nipsey Hussle and Drake.

Why do you think your website became what it is today?

It was organically done, and also just making sure my content was fresh, exclusive, and of course, consistent.

Tell us how your relationship came about with Mack Maine – what were you doing that grabbed his attention?

I met Mack Maine in Miami a few years ago and we discussed potential business opportunities. I was helping create ways for [Young Money] artists to brand themselves. Whenever YM artists would come to New York, I would help set up radio and press events.

What is one of your most memorable interviews?

I’d say Drake – he was the first interview for my site. It was the day after his birthday and we met at a Starbucks across from Penn Station. My cameraman was running an hour late and he just hung out and was chill [during] the entire situation. In the end he gave me a great interview. It was great to see him at the begging stages of his career.

How do you go about preparing for an interview?

Justin Tinsley, who is a big part of the site, he helps me form questions and we do a joint effort in prepping for interviews.

Do you think being a female in the industry has made it harder for you?

I try not to look at gender. Being a writer/blogger, I take my website very seriously. I just make sure the credibility is there and I uphold my integrity.

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment thus far in your career?

There are so many inspirational moments that I have been blessed with, but one that stands out the most to me is being named the MTV Hip Hop MVP. I can’t just pinpoint it to one thing.

What is your ultimate goal?

I want to keep on helping artists create social platforms. I’m in the process of writing a positive affirmation book to help people who are trying to succeed or some up in their field.

How would you describe your personal style? Favorite brands?

I’m not going to try and pretend I’m a “trendsetter,” but mainly I just wear whatever I feel looks good on me. I go through fazes in life – long dresses, surf/ beachy feel, my nerd look, my 5th Ave. look… I never really know the mood of style I’m in till the morning.

What are your favorite brands?

[Christian] Louboutin, Hello Kitty, Married to the Mob, Young and Reckless, and Free People – you can find me in any of these items at least once a day.
